Magda’s Big National Health Check on ABC television
Magda’s Big National Health Check was recently on ABC television. The 3-part series explained how the availability, promotion and pricing of highly processed foods make it hard for us all to eat well. Episode 1 highlighted how our kids are being bombarded with unhealthy food and drink advertising. Dr Sandro Demaio explained ‘the cards are stacked against us when it comes to being healthy in Australia today’. One strong influence on what we eat is the advertising we see – especially with children.
Researchers from Deakin University are using special glasses to measure children’s exposure to, and engagement with advertising. It comes as no surprise that their eyes are drawn to fast food advertisements on the sides of buses and trams. The Our Kids, Our Call campaign is calling on the government to stop putting unhealthy food ads on public transport and support children to grow, play and learn to their fullest.
