About 200,000 NSW children use the train or bus daily. Food companies place advertising to target children on these journeys.
In February 2018, we looked at the amount of junk food advertising on NSW Government-owned transport facilities.
The majority (82%) of food advertisements were for junk food and drink and only 1 in 10 were for healthier foods. One third of food advertisements were for sugar sweetened drinks (often frozen drinks as it was summer) and one in five were for meals such as burgers and chicken products.
In light of these results, Cancer Council NSW is asking the NSW Government to protect children from the influence of junk food marketing by removing junk food advertising from public transport.
